Description: The human MAGE genes are expressed in a wide variety of tumors but not in normal cells, with the exception of the male germ cells, placenta, and, possibly, cells of the developing embryo. Aberrant MAGE expression lead to tumor-specific antigens recognized on a human melanoma by autologous cytolytic T lymphocytes. The human MAGE genes are located on the X chromosome, in four clusters denoted MAGE-A, B, C, and D mapping at q28, p21.3, q26, and p11.2, respectively. Human MAGE-F1 is an intronless gene that is ubiquitously expressed in normal tissues and in tumor cells. Human MAGE-F1 includes a microsatellite repeat in the coding region. The cellular function of MAGE proteins in general is still unknown.
